Lot 502 - Sire: Art Major USA | Dam: Logically
Samantha Hill has been to too many yearling sales to make bold predictions, but the Birdwood horsewoman thinks her ‘Class of 2026’ is “probably the best bunch we’ve had for a few years”.
“There’s something to like about all of them,” she said.
Sam is preparing 10 yearlings – eight fillies and two colts - for the Australian Pacing Gold Adelaide Yearling Sale at the Gawler trotting track on Sunday, March 29.
They represent six different sires in Art Major (three lots), Stay Hungry (two), Ultimate Sniper (two) and Bettor’s Delight, For A Reason and Tiger Tara one each.
Geoff Easom, one of the most successful breeders in SA for the last decade and a long-time supporter of the SA yearling sales, has nominated three fillies and a colt under the Wyndown Stud banner.
The offering includes a pair of fillies by the former NZ 3YO of the Year and Horse of the Year and emerging, young sire Ultimate Sniper.
Lot 517 is from the good producer Freerange Chick, a daughter of the multiple Vicbred heat winner Feisty and thus a close relative to the dual Southern Cross winner Leftem For Dead, the Listed winner Muchos Gratias, Honeybun, Martial Artist, Big Black Betty, etc.
“She’s my pick of Geoff’s draft. She’s lovely. She’s got a beautiful long stride on her,” Samantha stated.
The other Ultimate Sniper is Lot 514, a filly out of the handy racemare Tiddly Winx and a member of the family that produced horses the calibre of the NSW Listed winner Major Reason ($146,000), Marty Major ($139,000) and the Ballarat Cup winner You Wish.
“She’s got a good work ethic,” Sam said.
Lot 510 is a filly by the leading colonial sire For A Reason from the 15-time winner Rosiano, a sibling to four winners including Heston Blue Streak (1:56.6) and the Southern Cross repechage victor Beads And Braids.
“She’s a strongly built filly. She’s got a bit of an attitude but I like that in a filly,” Sam stated.
The lone colt from the Wyndown consignment is Lot 512, a product of the Inter Dominion champion and Horse of the Year Tiger Tara out of the SA Ladyship Stakes placegetter Whirly Girly.
“He’s a strongly built colt. He will go as a two-year-old,” Sam predicted.
Former Harness Racing SA chief executive and successful breeder-owner Mark Carey has entered three fillies – two by Art Major and one by Bettor’s Delight - all from the one family. They all trace to the celebrated New Zealand matron Burgundy Lass, whose descendants include the million dollar earners Il Vicolo, Stunin Cullen and Gotta Go Cullen and others in It’s All About Faith, Coburg and Our Triple Play.
The first of the Hampton Farms’ consignment is Lot 502, an Art Major filly from the unraced Roll With Joe mare Logically, a half-sister to the dual Southern Cross Final winner Brighton and the Golden Nursery placegetter Thiswaytothebeach.
“She’s mum’s (Mandy Pascoe) favourite out of all of them. She’s quite aloof,” Sam stated.
“She’s a big, strong girl who looks like a racehorse already.”
The second Art Major is a lovely filly out of My Logic, Lot 505, a half-sister by the great Western Ideal to the dam of Lot 502.
Completing the Carey draft is Lot 511, a filly by the supersire Bettor’s Delight and the only one of his progeny in the SA auction. She’s a half-sister to Brighton, Thiswaytothebeach and to the mothers of Lot 502 and Lot 505.
“She’s a beautiful filly. She’s everything that you would expect out of Mark’s breed,” Sam stated.
