Well respected Busselton horseman Terry Ferguson rose to the top of the mountain in the 1990’s through the deeds of the progeny of the broodmare gem Soky’s Number.
The siblings Saab, Talladega and Saabella all won multiple Group One’s and between them amassed more than $1.2 million when stakes were far below their present day level.
A sister to the celebrated trio in Saabrina, who was also raced by Ferguson, figures as the grand-dam of the WA Oaks winner Sports Package and the WA Diamond Classic victor Cimorene.
Ferguson, who conducts Seahorse Racing Stables on a 100 acre seaside property, is currently breeding from 10 broodmares, eight of whom are by the great Bettor’s Delight.
He has been a long-time supporter of the WA yearling sales, selling horses the calibre of WA Golden Nugget winner Schinzig Buller and the cup class pacer Polak.
Terry has entered four youngsters – three fillies and a colt – for the Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale at Magic Millions on Sunday, March 1.
“I’m happy with the four of them. They’re all well conformed and they all look quite racy,” Ferguson said.
The draft includes two descendants of Soky’s Number, a former Australian Broodmare of the Year award winner.
Lot 410, a colt by the champion sire Rock N Roll Heaven, is the second foal of Sports Package, the winner of nine races including the WA Oaks and Country Oaks and over $150,000 in stakes.
Other members of the immediate family are the WA Diamond winner Cimorene, the multiple Group placegetter Bettor Pack It and the WA Oaks heat winner Saabrina.
“He’s an upstanding colt that reminds me very much of Talladega,” Terry stated.
Meanwhile, Lot 416, a well put together bay filly, is one of the first crop of the 2022 USA and Canadian 3YO of the Year Pebble Beach and the first foal from the $100,000 winning Bettor’s Delight mare Bettor Pack It, a great granddaughter of Soky’s Number.
Lot 437, a bay filly by the colonial bred stallion The Storm Inside, traces back to the No Nukes mare Walkin The Line USA, who was imported from North America by Ferguson in the mid 1990’s.
She’s out of the lightly raced Art Major mare Art On The Line, whose first two foals in Last King Of Capel and Akabah both were successful last season.
Her third foal, a two-year-old colt named Rip Tide (by Downbytheseaside), is showing good ability and is being fitted for the APG Sales Classic series at Gloucester Park.
The other Pebble Beach filly is Lot 340, the first foal of the Breeders Crown heat and Northam Cup winner Captured Delight, a half-sister to three Group winners and seven sub 2:00 performers.
They include Schinzig Buller, the prolific Gloucester Park and North American winner Polak ($920,000) and the Westbred Mares’ Final winner La Stella Del Mare.
“She’s a stocky filly, wide in the chest and has a good attitude,” Terry said.
