Darren Reay, the studmaster at Medowie Lodge, Newcastle, is adamant that the 11-strong draft he is presenting for the Australian Pacing Gold Sydney Yearling Sale at Warwick Farm on Sunday, March 15 is one of his best ever.
Reay is preparing 11 yearlings - six colts and five fillies – by six different stallions in Art Major (4 lots), Bettor’s Delight (2), Stay Hungry (2), Captaintreacherous, Bettor’s Wish and Catch The Fire.
Six of the youngsters are being consigned by prominent breeder-owner Scott Whitton, of Tumby Park, whose horses carry the ‘Ultimate’ moniker.
The Tumby Park contingent is spearheaded by a colt and two fillies by the champion sire and broodmare sire Art Major.
Lot 232, an Art Major colt, is the second foal out of the 1:54 Menangle juvenile winner Our Ultimate Lizzy NZ, a Sweet Lou half-sister to five 2:00 performers including the Queensland Listed winner Escalera.
The two Art Major fillies both belong to outstanding New Zealand standardbred families.
Lot 206 is from the good producer Lady Lindenny NZ, a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to the A. G. Hunter Cup winner Surprise Package, while Lot 244 is out of the 1:53 Menangle and Albion Park winner Rocking NZ, a Rocknroll Hanover granddaughter of the NZ 2YO Filly of the Year Megaera.
Whitton is also offering a pair of yearlings by the siring colossus Bettor’s Delight.
Lot 236, a bay filly, is the first foal from the unraced Art Major mare Our Ultimate Molly NZ, a half-sister to four winners headed up by the exported Delightful Catherine 1:50.8, a winner of 39 races and $730,000 in stakes.
“She’s a Bettor’s Delight through and through. A strongly built filly who really loves her work,” Reay stated.
The Bettor’s Delight colt (Lot 210) is from the Albion Park and Menangle victor Lauramegan NZ, the dam of three winners from three to race including the $100,000 earner My Ultimate Eddie and the QBred Triad heat winner Our Ultimate Kimmy.
Completing the Tumby Park entry is a big, strong Stay Hungry colt out of Our Ultimate Mary, a half-sister to the Brisbane APG Sales Graduate and Pot of Gold winner Jossie James ($412,000) and the Triad Final placegetter Major Jarod.
“He looks like he will get up and go early,” Darren predicted.
NSW couple Mark and Nicole Tiedemann, trading as Summerhill Pastoral Young, have nominated two royally bred colts for the sale.
The first is Lot 207, a bay colt by last season’s leading first crop sire Bettor’s Wish out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Jeepas Keepas, a granddaughter of the APG and dual Oaks winner Kept For Pleasure. He’s closely related to the Auckland Cup and dual Derby winner and successful colonial sire Vincent, the NSW Group 2 winner My Mackenzie and the exported Keep Rockin 1:48.6.
“He’s a true Bettor’s Wish type. He’s got a bit of get up and go about him,” Darren said.
The other colt is Lot 253, a very correct Art Major from the Mach Three mare Tuapeka Sky NZ, a three-quarter sister to the three-time NZ Group winner Bonnie Joan and the NZ Southern Supremacy winner Sand Wave and a half-sister to the NSW Winter Championship victor Wavethebill.
Medowie Lodge is also preparing a pair of superbly bred youngsters for tyro breeders Todd and Tori McMillan, of Emerald Park Performance Horses, Tamworth.
Lot 242 is a striking Captaintreacherous colt out of the unraced Bettor’s Delight mare Revere Me NZ. Also a daughter of the dual NZ Broodmare of the Year Scuse Me and thus a close relative of the millionaire pacers Have Faith In Me and Adore Me and the sensational racemare Captain’s Mistress.
Lot 204, is a filly by the brilliantly fast Catch A Fire and one of the first Australian crop of Captaintreacherous. She ranks as a half-sister to the cup class pacer Hector and the NZ 4YO Mare of the Year Mantra Blue.
Medowie Lodge has a single entry at the sale in Lot 254, a Stay Hungry filly out of the Art Major mare Alarm Belle, a sister to the APG NSW Championship winner La La Bron and a close relative of the champion NZ race and broodmare Under Cover Lover.
“She’s a strong, long barrelled filly. She’s a similar type to her half-brother who made $35,000 at last year’s sale and won a trial at Menangle recently,” Reay said.
