Kapunda couple Shane and Michele Collins, whose first foray into the yearling sale market was the Sires Classic placegetter Secret Lady, are lining up again at the Southern Stars Yearling Sale at the Gawler Barossa Jockey Club on Sunday, February 11.
They will be represented by Lot 2, a bay colt by the NSW Derby winner, Vicbred champion and emerging sire Major Secret from the grand producing Real Desire mare Our Burning Desire (1:55.3).
He’s a half-brother to the Listed Vicbred 2YO Silver winner The Huntress (1:53), now racing successfully in America, Gee Smith (1:56.6), a winner of 14 races and $152,808, and recent Cranbourne two and three-year-old winner Shevchenko (1:57.2).
The Collins bought Our Burning Desire off ASBA secretary and former BOTRA News editor Gary Newton about 12 months ago on the advice of Allenby Lodge studmaster Steve Norman, who is preparing the colt.
“He’s a fine boned, athletic and very correct colt,” Norman said.
Norman is also preparing another Major Secret colt in The Apache Chief (Lot 14) for Lara (Vic.) hobby breeder Heath Posgate.
The colt is out of the successful broodmare Bitta Sweet Lombo, the dam of five foals to race for five winners – all inside 2:00 – and who ranks as a sister to the Australian Pacing Gold winner Leilani Lombo ($224,595).
“He’s a solidly built colt, well mannered and correct,” Norman stated.
Salisbury horseman Pat Vallelonga, a long-time supporter of the SA sales, is dually represented at this year’s auction.
The first of his draft is Lot 6, a strongly built colt by the leading American import Rock N Roll Heaven, the sire of Let It Ride, Expensive Ego, Swayzee and co, from the Four Starzzz Shark mare Roccellajonica (1:59.7).
The colt is a member of the same family as that which produced the SA Breeders Plate victor Andross, the Southern Cross heat winners Nothing In Between and Nicky Vee and the exported Stylish Scooter 1:53 ($224,709).
Vallelonga is also offering a lovely filly by dual USA Horse of the Year Shartin’s sire Tintin In America as Lot 12.
She’s the first foal of a Live Or Die mare from one of Roydon Lodge stud’s most outstanding families.
The filly’s grand-dam Roydon Reign left 13 foals for seven winners and her third dam Roydon Dream, winner of the NZ Broodmare of the Year award, produced 15 foals for 10 winners including the NZ Horse of the Year Roydon Glen.
Well known Glencoe breeder-owners Bob and Zita Maloney have a single entry in the sale, however on the score of pedigree and type, it seems certain to create more than passing interest.
It is Lot 10, a bay colt by the Captaintreacherous horse Captain Crunch 1:47.4 ($1.5million), a top colt pacer in North America and whose first crop racing as two-year-olds last year took all before them.
Steam Washed NZ, the dam of the colt, was an exceptional racemare numbering the SA Oaks, the Queen of the Pacific and the Victoria Ladyship Cup among her 20 successes.
At the stud Steam Washed has a 100 percent record with four foals for four winners – three in 2:00 – including Steam Cleaned (1:56), a winner of 23 races to date and $122,353, and the Southern Cross and Oaks placegetter Always Steamed Up.
