TRADING UP

“You need to have faith in yourself. Be brave and take risks. You don't have to have it all figured out to move forward.”

Roy T Benett

One of Australasia’s leading breeders came across this quote some years back and it had a very positive impact on him and his extended family.

At the time this small size breeder felt like the sport and the breeding industry were leaving him and his family behind and he had only two real choices left to make.

  1. Walk away from the sport he loved and see years of hard work going down the drain for a worse than zero return.
  2. Start TRADING UP  into stronger mare families and give breeding elite horses one more try.

Thankfully this hardworking astute breeder backed himself and his systems. He went and started TRADING UP (looking for broodmares stronger than the ones he had). He did this by identifying and purchasing mares that had the ability to leave elite horses. In what could only be described as an incredible turn around in events, in just 5 years he now has an elite band of broodmares that have sold yearlings for north of $100,000 and more importantly has a cabinet filling up with group 1 trophies.

One of the great aspects of harness racing ( thanks to APG ) is that it still offers a fair and open playing field for breeders.  Yes, we have some very successful breeders that clearly have significant wealth and resources, however, l believe the accomplishments of some of the smaller insightful breeders are truly amazing, and this is not as possible in other codes.

The APG NATIONAL MIXED SALE (which starts this Monday) may just be the perfect vehicle for those breeders looking at TRADING UP so they too can start mixing it with the most prosperous and successful owners and consignors in this country.

The facts are that harness racing has a brilliant record of rewarding those breeders that take a risk, have faith in themselves and are brave to move forward. It’s a given that TRADING UP opportunities’ will be presented in APG NATIONAL MIXED SALE so good luck to those that BACK THEMSELVES.
