Within twelve months, New Zealand star I Can Doosit has quickly established himself as the best trotter in this part of the world.
I Can Doosit swept through the Gr.1 $250,000 Seelite Windows & Doors Inter Dominion Trotting Championship series after claiming the Grand Final at TABCORP Park, Melton on Saturday night.
Aided by a clever drive by trainer Mark Purdon, I Can Doosit ($1.50 fav.) scored easily by 5.3 metres from emerging big race trotting talent Vulcan ($14.50) with a further 5.6 metres back to Sovereignty ($23.70) in third.
I Can Doosit joins Scotch Notch, Pride Of Petite, Take A Moment and Sundons Gift as dual winners of the famed series that commenced back in 1948 when staged in Auckland, New Zealand.
Unfortunately, I Can Doosit will not get the chance to create history and become the first three-time winner with the event now being discontinued.
Local star I Didnt Do It shot to the early lead before making a break, Kiwi raider The Fiery Ginga then pounced on the lead with I Can Doosit angling to the inside to race in the trail.
The lead time in the 2760m feature was covered in 1;22.4.
The pace remained steady with The Fiery Ginga running through the first half in sectionals of 31.7 seconds and 30.6 seconds, I Can Doosit sat poised on the leader's back.
Entering the back straight, The Fiery Ginga travelled strongly with former champion Sundons Gift parked on his outside while Springbank Richard poured on strong pressure three-wide.
The third quarter was timed in 29 seconds, The Fiery Ginga led from Springbank Richard with Vulcan now looming wider while I Can Doosit waited for the passing lane.
In the straight, Vulcan and I Can Doosit drew clear of their rivals before the latter raced away in the concluding stages.
The final quarter was clocked in 28.8 seconds.
The milerate was 2;00.4, just 0.1 second outside of the track record held by Let Me Thru.
“This is a special victory in many ways, he's not entirely comfortable on this track and he went a wee bit roughly at the top of the straight but he trotted strongly thereafter.” Purdon stated.
The victory provided Purdon with his fifth training title after previous success with Pride Of Petite (1996/97) and Buster Hanover (1998).
“He's a very special horse, he's still very young so his future looks very bright.
“The win also provided the first big Group success for his very special owners in Ken and Karen Breckon on Australian soil too, it's great to win this race again for them.
“It's unlikely he we will venture to the northern hemisphere for the big races up there, I think we will just focus on the features back in Auckland in the coming weeks.”
The Muscles Yankee 6yo has now claimed two legs of the Trotters Grand Circuit this season after scoring in the Gr.1 $NZ 80,000 National Trot at Alexandra Park, Auckland on December 31.
Vulcan remains the Grand Circuit leader with 12 points, two clear of I Can Doosit with four legs remaining.
The next leg of the Trotters Grand Circuit is the Gr.1 $50,000 VL Dullard Cup on February 17 at TABCORP Park, Melton.
