Dubbo enthusiast Maryann Lew is one of the busiest women in harness racing in the NSW central west at the moment.
She is dividing her time between her two young children, working in the office at the local primary school and preparing four yearlings, three fillies and a colt, for the Australian Pacing Gold Sydney Yearling Sale at Warwick Farm on March 15.
A member of a family steeped in harness racing, the charming Maryann is a daughter of the legendary horseman the late Jack O’Shea and a sister to prominent trainer-driver John O’Shea, while her husband Kurt Lew is best known for his association with the ‘Jogalong’ horses.
Her four-strong consignment for APG Sydney includes a colt and a filly – both from the same family - from retired Kiama school teacher Robert Corfield, who has been breeding as a hobby for around 40 years.
Lot 276, a filly by the boom sire Always B Miki, is out of a Roll With Joe half-sister to the 10- time winner Fromelles, the dam of the Group 2 winner and NSW Breeders Challenge runner-up Titian Raider 1:50.
“She’s a lovely, sensible type. She’s my pick of the draft,” Maryann stated.
The other half of Corfield’s entry is Lot 279, a colt by the North America Cup winner and Breeders Crown champion Pebble Beach out of Fromelles.
“He’s a big, strong, strapping colt,” she said.
APG field agent John Coffey and NSW Standardbred Owners Association committee member Dyanna Thommeny are offering a lovely Art Major filly as Lot 228.
The filly is out of a winning full sister to the outstanding WA pacer and dual WA Pacing Cup winner My Hard Copy, the winner of 27 races including five at Group level and $1.2 million, and the Group 2 WA winner My Carbon Copy ($290,000).
“She’s a very feminine filly and a beautiful filly to do anything with. She’s a true Art Major type,” Maryann said.
Wayne Loader, a board member of the Bathurst club, and his wife Julie, have entered a filly by the 1:46 Captaintreacherous import Catch The Fire out of the 22-time winner and Group 2 placegetter Alphitonia. She is listed as Lot 261.
A half-sister to the NSW Bred Final victor Kick The Switch 1:52.9, the bay filly belongs to the same family as the APG Final winners Keppel Bay and Jilliby Jitterbug, the Queensland Oaks winner Ashton Lass and Jilliby Dynamite 1:48.4.
“She’s a big, leggy filly who’s beautiful to handle,” Maryann stated.
