LOCAL glory and bragging rights are just what veteran horseman Greg Scholefield hopes to achieve this weekend.
No stranger to feature success at a wide range of tracks - both in South Australia and interstate - Scholefield is poised to contest a pair of Cups at his home track, Mount Gambier, tonight.
Boasting solid chances in the Gold and Country Pacing Cups, Scholefield believes an "ounce of luck" is all he needs to capture the pair.
Hanging Fire will begin the attack when he tackles the Country Pacing Cup from barrier six.
Despite being the widest drawn runner, the son of Alta Christiano will be sent forward in search of the lead according to Scholefield.
"He's drawn six, but has really good gate speed...it's his main attribute," Scholefield said. "His forte is to lead, and when he does find the front, it makes him hard to get around.
"Add the small track into the calculations and it will take a pretty big run to get past him if he does in fact lead."
Scholefield will then contest the Gold Cup with the lightly-raced Mikicool.
In what will be the gelding's 10th start, Mikicool will begin from the middle of the second row.
"It's not an ideal draw on paper, but he does follow through Bettorpatchmeup, which is likely to go forward," Scholefield said. "He will need an ounce of luck from the back line, but he will let them know he is there.
"I jogged him Friday morning and all he wanted to do was go, so he is fit and well for the Cup."
