Lot 349 - Sire: Captain Crunch USA | Dam: Deal With Me NZ
The legacy of the late John Lohman, one of WA’s most successful breeders and owners, will live on through three yearlings to be offered under the Solid Gold Standardbreds’ banner at the Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale on Sunday, March 1.
Lohman, who passed away in 2020, had been a stable mainstay of leading trainer Justin Prentice, who conducts a successful training and breeding establishment at Boyanup.
“We both learned a lot from John. We asked John if we could continue on his name and he allowed us to do that,” Prentice’s wife Jacqueline, who is prepping the yearlings, said.
“He was a massive influence on us going down the breeding path, which we are very grateful for. He was a book of knowledge and hopefully we can make him proud.”
The three yearlings for sale at the Magic Millions Complex are all out of mares handpicked by Lohman in New Zealand.
“We are excited with our three lots for the sale. It’s hard not to be when you look at their pedigree pages and the individuals themselves,” Jacqueline stated.
Lot 349 is a powerfully built colt by promising young sire Captain Crunch from the American Ideal mare Deal With Me NZ, a close relative of the pacing standout and WA Pacing Cup hero Magnificent Storm and the Victoria Derby winner and NZ Sires’ Stakes champion Maxim.
“He’s very correct and compact. We really like him. We think he’s going to be one that the buyers are going to be interested in,” Jacqueline said.
Lot 306, a Sweet Lou filly out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Broadbeach NZ, is also a lovely type.
“She’s a November foal, so she’s a little bit immature compared to the other two. She has a strong hind quarter and she’s very correct,” she said.
Broadbeach, who won twice at Gloucester Park, is a sibling to three $100,000 earners and two sub 1:50 performers including the Group 2 Melton Plate and the Group 2 NZ Southern Supremacy Stakes winner Duke Of Wellington.
She’s bred on the identical cross as the 2023 USA 2YO Filly of the Year Geocentric and the USA Breeders Crown two-year-old champion Ammo.
The last of the Solid Gold draft is Lot 353, a filly by the emerging siring force Downbytheseaside and the first foal from the thrice Group winning Bettor’s Delight mare Bettor Get It On NZ.
Bettor Get It On totted up 11 wins including the Group 2 WA Empress Stakes, the Group 3 The Coulson and the Group 3 The Laurie Kennedy and banked more than $190,000.
“This filly is super strong. She looks more like a colt than a filly,” Jacqueline said.
“Her mum was super tough, so we’re hoping that she will have the same attributes as her.”
