Trainers and Veterinarians are advised that the use of bisphosphonates can lead to prolonged and unpredictable detection times.
Bisphosphonates are pharmaceutical agents that interfere with normal bone remodelling processes.
There are currently only two (2) products containing bisphosphonates registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA):
- Tildren Injection for Horses (tiludronic acid as disodium tiludronate);
- Osphos Injection for Horses (clodronic acid as disodium clodronate).
Trainers and Veterinarians are reminded that any other bisphosphonate, including but not limited to zoledronic acid, are prohibited at all times.
In addition, the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) have advised that there will be a total ban on the use of ALL bisphosphonates from 1 January 2027.
This total ban of ALL bisphosphonates is due to the welfare related concerns, including a potential increased risk of fracture as well as evidence of an analgesic effect.
In view of the above information, Trainers and their Veterinarians should immediately cease the use of bisphosphonates.
To avoid any sample irregularities in relation to horses that have been treated with bisphosphonates, Trainers are reminded that HRNSW provides an elective testing service for a number of long acting substances that may have unpredictable detection times, including bisphosphonates.
