It’s never been more critical to lock down your data. Choosing to safeguard your information in advance could save you a lot of unnecessary stress later.

With cyber-attacks impacting people all over Australia every day, now’s the time to check in on how you’re protecting your personal details.

Question new contacts: If you’re suspicious of a piece of communication, it’s likely for good reason. Scammers will target you through any means necessary, including email, telephone and text-based scams. Stay wary on all online channels.

Use two factor authentication: Double check that all your relevant online accounts use two-factor authentication. From social media to emails, this helps give your details an extra layer of digital protection.

Update your passwords: Don’t set and forget. Regularly update them and make sure you use a different password for each new website. Australian Cyber Security Centre provides guidance around good password practices here.

Keep your security current: Scams are sophisticated, and it’s essential that the anti-virus software on your online devices is up to date to combat their newest approach. In addition, avoid using unsecured networks for sensitive information or transactions.

Protecting your bank details:

Hackers are relentless and will often go after your bank account information in addition to your personal details.

Keep tabs on your bank account: Make sure you regularly look at your account statements and transactions. This can help you notice suspicious activity early and immediately report the event to your bank. At the minimum, check in on your credit yearly.

Set up two factor authentication: If you’re protecting your social media account with SMS codes, you should extend this same courtesy to your bank accounts.

Be cautious of links:  It’s always safer to get on the phone to your bank. Don’t ever respond to, open or click on links in emails.

Best practice for cyber safety is constantly evolving. Keep up to date with official resources:
