ONE of New Zealand's top young horsemen will add some more star power to Saturday night's Albion Park meeting.

Carter Dalgety, NZ's leading junior driver last season and a rising star of the sport, will make a surprise appearance at the meeting.

And it could be the forerunner to more hit-and-run trips across the ditch.

Dalgety will have two drives for trainer Michael Brennan, who has moved from WA to Queensland to become private trainer for owner Josh Davine.

“This just sort of fell into place,” Dalgety said. “I was planning a trip to visit my sister, Madi, who lives in Queensland and then Josh (Davine) said their stable driver, Korbyn Newman, was away on holidays and asked if I’d take a couple of drives for them.”

Dalgety was last at Albion Park when he contested the hugely successful Ladbrokes Ultimate Driver Challenge in February,

“I love getting over there, especially given the weather at home this time of year, and there may be more opportunities to do it,” he said.

“Josh has obviously bought a lot of horses and is quickly building a big team so he said there could be drives available, especially when they get into the winter carnival there.

“I’d love to go over occasionally if the right opportunities arose.”

Dalgety will drive Brennan’s high-class pacer and Inter Dominion hopeful Pinny Tiger when he resumes from a spell on Saturday night.

Pinny Tiger, who boasts 20 wins and almost $375,000 in earnings, hasn’t raced since a ninth at Gloucester Park on January 31. Last season he won the Nullarbor Consolation/

Pinny Tiger is renowned for his gate speed and has been backed from $3.10 into $2.90 from gate three.

He is drawn inside his two main dangers, Wisper A Secret (gate five, $2.40) and Blacksadance (four, $2.70).

Dalgety’s other drive is former Tasmanian pacer Maebee from gate five in race two.
