Sawyers Gully trainer Adam Ruggari is enjoying the best start to a season he has experienced for some time.
Ruggari has had 37 starters this year, producing 13 winners, giving him a 35 per cent winning strike rate.
The horseman had a night to remember at Newcastle back in February when he trained four winners, a feat that was only overshadowed by Leap To Fame’s brilliant performance in his track record breaking run in the Newcastle Mile.
The arrival of some quality horses into his stable with the backing of some high-profile owners has been the nucleus of Ruggari’s recent run of success which is likely to see him heading to the metropolitan meetings at Tabcorp Park Menangle on a regular basis.
By his standards, this weekend is a quiet one having just one runner engaged on Friday and another on Saturday, but it is a case of quality over quantity.
Tonight at Newcastle, one of the stable’s stars, Quaddie VC will contest race five and although taking a slight step up in grade he will be looking to claim his third win from his past four starts.
A bold front running type, the son of Washington VC went on a hit and run mission to Queensland on March 22 where he scored an impressive win at Albion Park over the short trip, rating 1:52.5 with more than four metres to spare.
Ruggari believes the gelding’s racing style will suit the conditions of tonight’s race despite it being his first attempt at the 2030 metre trip at Newcastle.
“He is certainly doing a good job for us and his connections since joining our stable in January,” he said.
“I have been pleased with all but one of his efforts, his win last time out at Albion Park was strong and he relishes the Newcastle track.
“I am confident that he can go close provided the race is run to suit.”
Ruggari will be represented by Seve in race seven at Tabcorp Park Menangle tomorrow night, the gelding having won at his two Newcastle runs since transferring from the Victorian stable of Andy and Kate Gath.
Seve has drawn wide against a strong field, but Adam believes he could not have done anymore to impress in those two wins under his care.
“The draw is not ideal but Seve is a progressive type.”
