Owner-breeder Calum Mohr hopes to win a race that will mean a lot to him at the Carrick Park meeting on Sunday afternoon, the Don Peck Memorial (2510m), honouring his grandfather.
Mohr breeds Ultimate Mod, which he races in partnership with his father, Andrew, in the up to 49 national rating event.
Ultimate Mod broke through for his maiden win in Hobart last start, with the Ultimate Machete entire carrying the Green and Pink Square racing silks that Peck used during his time in the sport.
“It was very emotional to see pop’s colours go past the line first.
“It would be great if he could win pops Memorial. It is going to be a harder race. A few off the back line have won a few races between them, and I know a lot of the family will be out there to cheer him on,” said Calum ahead of Sunday’s race.
Calum has raced and bred several horses in recent years, but he was able to secure Ultimate Mod’s dam, All About Mod, whose bloodlines trace back to the breed that the Peck family had raced with gold success.
“I grew up with Nan and Pop and spent most of my childhood with them, going to the races or out to Carrick to work the horses.
“Rupert, pops father, had a good mare called Mod Humor back in the day, and then when he retired, pop ended up with her and won a few races before breeding from her, and ended up with one called Shansue Mod, who is the dam of All About Mod.
“I was tinkering around with another breed that I had, and Barrie Rattray suggested that I give Chester Bullock a call who had All About Mod at the time, to try and get pops breed going again, and Chester said go for it,” explained Calum, who is planning on breeding from three mares for the breeding season later in the year.
“I want to get a filly out of All About Mod to keep the bloodline going.
While he does desire to train, Calum is happy to leave that up to the Rattray family at present.
“I would love to train. It’s just having the time and space to do it. It is something I would like to do, but I run my own business, and that takes up a lot of my time.
“Barrie and Todd do great with the horses. I love spending time out there and seeing what they do. They are great people and are great with the new horses,” the owner-breeder said.
Sunday’s Carrick Park program is headlined by the Meander Valley Cup (2650m), race six on the eight-race program. The first race is scheduled for 15:02.
The meeting will be streamed on Tasracing Live, with races one through five shown on Sky Racing 2. The final three races are scheduled for Sky Racing 1.
