FORMER Victorian horseman Scott Gill broke a long drought from the winners’ circle earlier this week.

Moving to South Australia to be closer to his family, Gill was triumphant with Ah Amigo at Globe Derby on Tuesday night.

As such, Gill registered his first success since scoring with Equity Jeb in Echuca on March 22, 2008.

“It’s been a while since I had a winner,” Gill said. “In fact, that was my first starter for a few years as well.

“No matter how long it has been, you quickly remember how good it feels to get one on the board.”

Despite his name, Ah Amigo was anything but the punter’s friend when he led throughout from barrier two with Wayne Hill in the cart.

Competing against just three rivals, Ah Amigo caused an upset by beating $2.10 shot Sportsflight.

Running second has become a habit for Sportsflight, which has been the bridesmaid in each of his four starts!

Antiguas Be Be was four metres away third in 2:02.2 over 1800 metres.

For Ah Amigo, however, the victory marked a perfect debut for the six-year-old son of For A Reason.

“He’s had a lot of tendon issues which is why he hadn’t raced until this week,” Gill said. “So to see him come out and win at his first start is very satisfying.

“I’m over in Victoria at the moment to pick up another horse, so he has come for the ride to act as the travel Amigo on the way home.

“Once we get back I will aim him at another suitable race in a couple of weeks.”
