The richest weekend in West Australian racing history will be held this autumn with a series of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races.

Racing and Wagering Western Australia is launching a new slot race series, called The Western Trilogy, with a total of $5.5million prize money up for grabs across the three racing codes.

“We’re excited to announce Australia’s first tri-code slot racing event,” Chief Executive Officer Ian Edwards said.

“Western Australia is new territory for slot races and we are ideally placed to bring the trinity of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing together for the first time in one sensational weekend program.

“These three races will be among the richest in the state for each racing code.

“Each race has taken a name with a strongly West Australian flavour: The Quokka, The Nullarbor and The Sandgroper.”

This is how owners across each racing code will compete for the total prize pool:

  • $4 million Quokka – Ascot, 15 April 2023
  • $1 million Nullarbor – Gloucester Park, 14 April 2023
  • $500,000 Sandgroper – Cannington, 14 April 2023

The first annual tri-code slot racing extravaganza will begin with the harness and greyhound races at Gloucester Park and Cannington on Friday evening, followed by Ascot’s $4 million feature the next day.

“We’re delighted to host a unique racing weekend for interstate visitors during a beautiful time of year in Western Australia,” Ian said.

“We look forward to revving up the colour and entertainment of WA’s autumn racing carnival by welcoming the best equine and canine talent from around the country.

“This will create the ideal counterpoint to our popular and successful spring racing carnival.”

There will be 14 slots available for The Quokka, part of a new-look autumn carnival at Ascot, at a cost of $200,000 per slot. The Nullarbor at Gloucester Park includes 10 slots at $70,000 per slot. The Sandgroper at Cannington has eight slots at $44,000 each.

Registrations are now open to secure a slot and close at 10am on Wednesday, 26 October 2022.
