It was a big weekend in the Tasmanian harness world with great racing in Burnie and Hobart last weekend.
Last weekend we also crowned Ryley Major as the 2019-2020 Tasmanian Horse Of The Year at the annual awards night held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Saturday.
This week we have the states premier race night in Hobart on Saturday evening with the Group 2 Tasmania Cup, Group 3 Tasmanian Derby, Group 3 Tasmanian Oaks and the George Johnson headlining a brilliant 11-race card.
The Stars
Phillip Young – was rewarded for over six decades of service to the states harness racing industry when he was crowned the Edgar Tatlow medalist for the 2019-2020 season at the Tasmanian Harness Racing Awards night in Launceston on Saturday.
Greg Sugars and Jess Tubbs – the husband and wife team had a night out in Hobart on Sunday with Triple Eight proving too good off his 30-metre handicap in the second heat of the Tasmania Cup, while Momentslikethese warmed up for Saturday’s Tasmanian Oaks with a dominant win in the Three Year Old Fillies Championship.
John Nicholson– loves a Tasmanian mission and started his Autumn Carnival pursuit with a training quinella in the Tasmanian Guineas with Alby Two Chains defeating Seas Choice.
Blame It On Me – will fly the Tasmanian flag in Saturday’s George Johnson and was in the winners list on Sunday with an all the way win over the 2579-metre trip, admiringly she had a soft run in the early and middle stages before dashing home to score a 15-metre win.
Chris Aylett – had a night out at Burnie when he trained, drove, owned and bred Hurrikane Kiwi to his maiden win in the second heat of the Allen Williams Memorial.

Hobart – Sunday afternoon
George Johnson favourite Our Princess Tiffany had a solo trial before Sunday’s race meeting where she ran her first half in 62.5s before quarters of 28.5s and 27.3s for a mile of 1m 58.3s.
Annerie sits on the second line of betting for Saturday night’s Tasmanian Oaks and won her trial with ease in 2m 2.3s. After settling four back the pegs, The Gold Ace filly led up the running line from the 800-metres to score by 11.3 metres, with the last two quarters leader to winner ran in 31.1s and 28.6s.
Carrick Park – Monday evening
Only two runners contested the first trial with Weerrook Harry for Harrison Ross who led all the way to score in the quickest mile rate of the session of 2m 3.2s.
Mucho Mover (2m 8.2s) and The Lemondrop Kid (2m 6.5s) both led to win there respective trials.
