Jason Lee gets everything out of Mark Dennis to win at Tabcorp Park Melton.
Friday night’s winning double at Tabcorp Park Melton placed young gun reinsman Jason Lee ninth overall on the Victorian drivers’ premiership table.
Lee, who will be hoping to add to his wins’ tally at Terang tomorrow night, boasts six successes from 23 drives to date in 2014-15 for one of strongest strike rates in the game.
The 19-year-old booted home Isabelle Delacour for Stephen Clarke on Friday night in the Melton Plate Next Saturday Pace over 1720 metres before repeating the dose aboard Mark Dennis for South Australian trainer Lance Holberton in the Go Swans Pace over 1720 metres.
“I actually thought a fair bit higher of Mark Dennis than what the odds suggested,” Lee said.
“He got out like a rocket and popped across, which put Machin Out three back the pegs and gave me a chance to out-sprint them, especially over the 1720 metres.”
Lee was chuffed about his winning double.
“A double anywhere is nice but to get one in town is always special,” he said.
Lee, touted by many as the trots’ next big thing, is preparing for a scorching summer of big-race action aboard star pacer Keayang Cullen.
“I’m excited about his prospects,” Lee said.
“He’s always been a good horse and we’ve always known he’s good but he really has taken the next step.”
Keayang Cullen will be aimed at sprint features up until the Miracle Mile, the Lee team from Terang – the horse is trained by Marg Lee – hoping to secure a start in the time-honoured Sydney Group 1 sprint.
After that Keayang Cullen will be aimed at all the big races at varied distances.
“I don’t think any distance worries him,” Jason Lee said.
Lee said he was also excited by the stable’s strong crop of two-year-olds coming through the ranks.
