Sushi Sushi had a brilliant run at the top level over a number of years.

Australian harness racing lost one of its great heroes of this millennium on Monday as news filtered through that Sushi Sushi had to be put down after shattering a leg.

Known for his feats between the end of 2010 and start of 2012 where he was simply unbeatable, after stringing together 16 straight wins he was narrowly defeated in the Ballarat Cup.

In a career that spanned three seasons, Sushi Sushi notched up 27 wins from his 47 starts and over $1.1 million in prizemoney.

His most famous victories include the 2011 Victoria Derby where he ripped around Melton in 1:55.7 as well as the Breeders Crown of the same season and the Great Northern Derby in New Zealand.

Having missed a place just three times in his Australian career, his last preparation bore a Bendigo Cup win and another narrow defeat in the Ballarat Cup.

Racking up a string of race wins at the same time that Black Caviar hit the scene in the gallops world, Freddy Taiba’s gelding by Art Major was able to transcend the trotting code and crossover like few others have managed to do since.

Driven regularly by Greg Sugars, Sushi Sushi was in the midst of a preparation that would have eventually lead to a race track return.

However today’s shock loss means that he has been seen for the last time by trots fans.
