Sushi's Draw Is Sweet Says Sugars

The driver of brilliant four year old Sushi Sushi, Greg Sugars believes the son of Art Major has drawn perfectly in Saturday night’s Paleface Adios Stakes at Tabcorp Park Menangle. With the first five horses past the post qualifying for Saturday week’s Gr. 1 Chariots Of Fire, Sushi Sushi originally drew barrier seven but with the scratching of Royal Verdict looks set to start from gate six this weekend.

“I think the middle of the line is perfect for Sushi Sushi and where he is at in his preparation right now,” Sugars said.

“I’m not sure that I would have wanted to draw one of two and been forced to drive him ultra aggressively to hold his spot early and obviously drawing out wide isn’t ideal either so at this stage everything looks perfect.”

Sushi Sushi trialled at Victoria’s Tabcorp Park Melton on Monday night and Sugars was pleased with the gelding’s effort to finish third.

“He looked so much tighter on Monday night than when I had seen him last time and he worked home very nicely in the trial after I dropped him out and brought him with a sweeping run, he felt strong and I’m really looking forward to the next two weekends in Sydney.”

“A lot of people are saying the Chariots Of Fire is a two horse race between Excel Stride and Sushi Sushi but I think last week’s Hondo Grattan Stakes when Excel Stride was forced to earn his victory proves there is a lot more depth in this series and remember we have to race Mark Purdon’s Hands Christian this week, so it won’t be easy this Saturday.”

It will be a busy twenty four hours for Sugars with the leading horseman set to drive the filly he trains La Machane in the Victoria Oaks on Friday night before heading to Sydney on Saturday morning.

“My filly is a very resilient racehorse and although she was forced to do a lot of work last week in the heats she has bounced back really well since and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her right in the finish on Saturday night.”
