Industry Supports Leukaemia Fundraiser

16 March 2007
The Australian harness racing industry is throwing its weight behind the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser.
Many of the sport’s biggest names have put their hand up in the name of charity, but they need a helping hand from you before their prized locks will fall foul of a shaver.
Gavin Lang, Chris Alford, Gavin Fitzpatrick, Steve Turnbull, Luke McCarthy and Sky Channel big guns Sam Nati and Mick Radley are amongst those who have volunteered to take part in the ‘Harness Racing Shave For A Cure’ over coming weeks.
Seven “shaving events” have been scheduled, but the catch is that coordinators have set a bounty of $3000 per event for each to proceed.
“The $3000 bounty for each event provides a fundraising target for the harness racing industry and we’re hopeful it will stimulate great support and interest for each,” coordinator Belinda Lamb said.
“For example we’ve set a target of $3000 for Victoria Oaks night on March 24 at Moonee Valley. If that figure is reached then Gavin Lang and Chris Alford will both have their hair shaved off before the big Group 1.
“Harness racing people are always very generous and we’re hoping they’ll get behind such a worthy cause as finding a cure for leukaemia.”
There are several ways to make a donation and importantly all donations over $2 are tax deductible.
People wishing to donate can either visit the website www.worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088 and state the group name “Harness Racing” for both donation options.
Alternately donations can be made on course at a number of harness racing venues over coming weeks, directly to shave volunteers on the night of each event, via a coupon published in the National Trotguide or by calling Belinda Lamb direct on 0417 066 481.
