Teenage trots enthusiast Lachlan Prothero has joined Mildura Harness Racing Club’s board and hopes to draw more young faces trackside.

Mr Prothero, who has served as a track attendant since September, pounced when the opportunity arose to play a bigger role in advancing the club.

“About two weeks ago a spot opened up and I thought it would be good to give a young person’s insight to the committee,” he said.

“As well as being able to help out with social media, when I look at the crowds, there are not as many young people and they are the future, so I will try and find ways to get young people along to the sport.”

The 18-year-old has long had a passion for the trots, having been introduced to it by his dad, trainer Andrew.

“All my life I have grown up around horses,” Mr Prothero said. “I drive track work a lot of the time.”

He’s spent plenty of time in a sulky, having participated in pony trots for six years and represented Victoria in the Lizzie of Rosslands Junior Driver Series in New Zealand two years ago where he finished second overall.

“I would like to eventually train and drive myself, after finishing year 12 of course and after a bit of university,” he said.

“Being with the horses is the main part I enjoy and the different challenges that you can have with different horses. Just to get them to race for a start can be a challenge and then to win is another thing all together.”
