South Australia’s reinswomen raised $9,400 through winning drives during the Australia-wide Women In Teal promotion raising funds for Ovarian Cancer research which concluded on Saturday.
Star driver Danielle Hill was the most successful driver throughout Australia with 32 wins during the six-week period earning $7,040.
Harness Racing South Australia and Ubet each gave $100 for each winning drive while Hill, with the personal sponsorship of thoroughbred trainer Gordon Carter, through Carter Racing, raised an additional $640.
Carter said he was delighted with Danielle Hill’s success.
“Through the sponsorship, Dani wore my race colours and to see them successful 32 times was brilliant,” Carter said.
“It is such a worthy cause that I’m more than happy to be handing over the money.”
Also on Saturday night, the South Australian reinswomen donated their driving fees from the Gawler@Globe Derby Park meeting to the Women In Teal promotion.
Jill Neilson, president of the South Australian Reinswomen’s Association said all drivers had been keen to be involved.
“Apart from supporting a cause close to their hearts, the girls also see it as a way of saying thank you to the public and corporate support for the Women In Teal promotion,” Ms Neilson said.
Established in 1996, the Women’s Cancer Foundation has raised millions of dollars to fund researchers looking for more effective ways to treat and care for women suffering with ovarian cancer. It is predicted close to 1500 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2017, with an estimated 70 per cent to lose their battle.
The Women In Teal idea began with Victorian harness enthusiasts Duncan McPherson and Michael Taranto. Originally a Victorian promotion, at Mr Taranto’s suggestion, this year it has become an Australia-wide campaign.
SA’s winning drivers during the Women In Teal campaign were: Danielle Hill 32; Leah Harvey 3; Angela Chapman, Megan Gee, Kaela Hryhorec, Lisa Ryan 2; Jacki Barker 1.
