YOU could say Martelle Maguire is thrilled with her moment in the spotlight at Tabcorp Park Menangle last night, but that would be an understatement.
Taking her position in the Lady Drivers’ International, Maguire not only captured the Group Two, she registered her maiden metropolitan win in the process.
On top of that, Maguire’s success came during the Women’s Cancer Foundation – Ovarian Institute via the Teal Pants campaign, a factor the reinswoman if extremely proud of.
“It was an amazing night…I’m still in shock,” Maguire declared. “I’m just so rapt, it still hasn’t sunk in.
“Each year that I’ve been involved with the teal pants I’ve wanted at least one winner as it is such a great cause, but so far this season I’ve managed a couple.
“And to get one for the fundraiser as my first metropolitan win on Miracle Mile night is something I will never forget.”
Partnering the Craig Cross-trained Epaulette, Maguire sent the gelding forward to find the lead from barrier six.
Proving too slick during the latter stages, the son of Four Starzzz Shark accounted for Lumos and Don Boston in 1:50.8 over the mile.
“I wasn’t overly confident as it was such a good field and there was a lot of speed inside me and didn’t know how the race would pan out,” Maguire said. “When he was able to find the front, I knew he would take a lot of running down.
“He was so strong up the home straight and I just couldn’t be more thrilled with the result.”
