AFTER eight enthralling rounds, the battle for the Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship title is still wide open.

Although New Zealand’s Robbie Close and New South Wales’ Todd McCarthy are tied at the top of the table, six competitors can still claim the ‘belt’.

The winner will be decided in tonight’s final heat set to be conducted at Gloucester Park as part of the Inter Dominion program.

Close and McCarthy are sitting on 69 points, with Kiwis Kyle Marshall and Matt Anderson on 63 and 62.

Queensland’s Nathan Dawson and New Zealander Brad Williamson, who have 60 points, can also emerge triumphant providing they win the heat and the leading pair fail to finish in the top four.

Should Close capture the series, he will be the first driver from the Shaky Isles to successfully defend the title, which he won in his homeland last season.

As it stands, only two youngsters have retained their throne from the previous year – John Caldow in 1987 and ’88 and David Miles in 1994 and ‘95.
