2015 Gordon Rothacker Medal recipient, Bruce Morgan.
Bruce Morgan tonight became the 14th Harness Racing Victoria Gordon Rothacker Medal recipient.
Instrumental in the establishment of the Nyah club in the early 1960s, Morgan would go on to set up a training complex near Swan Hill later that decade.
A desire to make a go of it as a professional trainer/driver saw Morgan make the leap to Bendigo in 1973 where he remained for the bulk of his career in the trots.
About 300 horses would have passed through Morgan’s stables as a trainer, and as a breeder he has produced 67.
Group 1 or class winners from the Morgan barn include Montana Anna, Belinda and Denver Gift.
But most famous of them all is possibly mighty Mother Courage, who won 30 races and placed another 38 times in an 81-start career that netted connections $462,520 in stakemoney.
The daughter of Stoneridge Scooter won the Vicbred Super Series Final as a two-year-old at Moonee Valley and went on to win the El Dorado as a three-year-old.
She won the Angelique Club Cup, the Ladyship Cup and the Bendigo Pacing Cup in 2002.
Bo Jasper was another handy horse from the Morgan stable, the son of Village Jasper a star performer in the trainer’s most successful season of 2002/03 when he claimed 46 wins.
Morgan’s contribution to the trots goes well beyond training and breeding.
He is a life member of the Bendigo club after serving on the committee for 20 years, he has served with distinction as a volunteer for the Bendigo Training Centre and he’s a 40-year member of the Victorian Harness Racing Sporting Club.
