Harness Racing New South Wales (HRNSW) conducts the commercial and regulatory functions of the harness racing industry in NSW. Operating under the Harness Racing Act 2009, HRNSW is chartered to operate autonomously of government in managing the strategic and commercial development of harness racing in NSW as a not-for-profit corporate body.

A full-time vacancy exists for Chairman of Stewards, based in Sydney.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer the successful applicant will be required to undertake the following tasks:

  • Chair harness meetings within NSW,
  • Manage the supervision and control of all harness meeting conducted within NSW,
  • Provide strategic support and advice to the Chief Operating Officer,
  • Conduct investigations and non-raceday inquiries,
  • Attend trials,  trackwork and conduct stable inspections,
  • Provide leadership to the Stewards panel, including rostering,
  • Shape values and standards for the Stewards,
  • Mentor and assist in the development of Stewards,
  • Maintain effective working relationships with industry stakeholders and race clubs,
  • Considerable travel will be required,

This Role requires work outside of normal business hours, and includes nights, weekends and public holidays.

The applicant should have the following skills

  • At least three (3) years experience as a senior steward in the racing industry with a comprehensive knowledge of the Rules.
  • Ability to chair race meetings, and represent HRNSW at Appeals.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and counsel stewards to achieve improved performance.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, and manage change.
  • Advanced ability to conduct investigations, analyse data and to draw appropriate conclusions.
  • Self motivated and ability to work within tight deadlines and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to manage the day to day operations of a Stewards panel.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to consult, motivate and resolve conflict and develop staff and other stakeholders.
  • Commitment to ensuring that Stewards operate in a fair, honest and transparent manner
  • High level of computer literacy with particular regard to MS Office (specifically Excel) and Word (in a LAN environment)
  • Commitment to working in a team environment and adherence to the HRNSW Staff Policy Manual and Code of Conduct.
  • Have or has the ability to obtain and maintain a NSW drivers licence

The successful applicant will be provided a remuneration package based upon their relevant experience.
