“Patience is the cheapest thing in racing and the thing most seldom used,” legendary trainer Bart Cummings said in 2007.
Toolleen trainer Jim Morrissey and his daughters, Danielle and Kylie, have certainly stuck to Cummings’ ethos with 10-year-old mare Kaka Point Coast.
The daughter of Washington VC will line up for start No.91 on Sunday’s Elmore at Bendigo program (Race 8 No.9) and she will be chasing her maiden victory.
Kaka Point Coast has placed 17 times from 90 starts for prizemoney of $21,150, but they say that first win is the toughest, and with her that’s certainly proving the case.
“He was my son-in-law’s father’s horse over in New Zealand and she raced over there and ran a lot of placings but couldn’t get that first win,” Morrissey said.
“She was sent over here because we thought she could probably win one here but no, she hasn’t quite got the job done yet.”
The breakthrough success might not be far off though, with Kaka Point Coast finishing second to Justa Dream Lombo last time out at Bendigo.
Sunday’s assignment has been made tougher by a gate-nine draw in a nine-horse field.
“She’s probably got the job ahead of her on Sunday,” Morrissey admitted.
Morrissey’s daughters race the easy-going mare, which is a pleasure to train.
“She’s pretty easy to train. She’s a very quiet horse,” said Jim.
Kaka Point Coast had a year off in 2012 to get over some soreness, but she’s 100 per cent now.
Morrissey said the plan was to eventually breed from her.
“There aren’t too many Washington VC mares in Australia,” he said.
Nigel Milne will drive Kaka Point Coast on Sunday.
