When Sports Chaton led throughout to win at Leeton in New South Wales on Friday 13th it was anything but bad luck for the vendors of the seven yearlings by Sportswriter in the 2014 Gloucester Standardbreds WA Yearling Sale.

Sports Chaton is the first of the Sportswriters to win and he won comfortably by six metres in a time of 2:01.9 over the 1758 metres.

There are four colts by Sportswriter in the 2013 WA Sale out of the mares Annies Witness, Art On The Beach (half-brother to 2013 Group One Pearl Classic winner Swagga), Crystal Journey (half-brother to 2013 WA 2yo Pacer of the Year Mister Jadore) and Living On Live.

The three Sportswriter fillies in the 2014 WA Sale are from the imported American sub 1:55 producing mare She Has Passion, Saab’s half-sister Soky Jo and The Silver Lining.

Sportswriter, a son of Artsplace, won eight races and $1,566,460 and his seven wins as a 2yo earned him the title of USA 2yo Colt and Gelding of the Year.

A week earlier and another first season sire in Shadow Play sired his first Australian winner per medium of the Geelong 2yo winner Spot Ona Shadow.

Spot Ona Shadow is from the WA Daintys Daughter Classic winner Charlotte Church.

Shadow Play has enjoyed a phenomenal 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere with six $100,000 earners in his first crop of 2yos and he will have four yearlings in the 2014 WA Yearling Sale.

There are Shadow Play colts out of a half-sister to WA Derby winner Trunkey Maseratti in Chemical Romance and Rich Date and fillies out of Im Ice Cold and River Valley Dream.

The filly out of River Valley Dream is very early in the sale (Lot 2) but should be highly sought after being out of an Artsplace mare.

Three of Shadow Play’s six $100,000 earning 2yos in North America this year are out of Artsplace mares with two of the three being fillies.
