Harness Racing NSW has been advised by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL) that capsaicin has been detected in the pre race urine sample taken from VERTIGAL prior to it completing in and winning, the Lands Legal Carousel, Group 2 (2300 metres) at Tabcorp Park Menangle on 28 April 2012.
This sample was frozen and stored by ARFL after receiving it on 30 April 2012 upon a request by HRNSW. This sample underwent further analytical analysis on a random basis.
The sealed “B” sample and sealed associated control where sent to the Racing Laboratory, Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for confirmation. HKJC has confirmed the presence of capsaicin.
An inquiry into these findings will be held on Thursday 14 March 2013. Mr D Thorn the trainer of VERTIGAL has been advised.
HRNSW in mid 2012 purchased a minus 80 degrees which is housed at ARFL for the storage of samples. HRNSW currently has around 150 frozen samples which on a random basis undergo further analytical analysis. This strategy is designed to ensure that HRNSW is at the forefront of equine drug control.
Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) is the controlling body for harness racing in New South Wales with responsibility for commercial and regulatory management of the industry including 31 racing clubs across the State. HRNSW is headed by an industry-appointed Board of Directors and is independent of Government.
