The Board of Harness Racing New South Wales has selected Neil Day to represent Australia at the World Driving Championship in France next year.

The announcement was made at the HRNSW Industry Awards night at the Sheraton on the Park in Sydney on Saturday night.

Day was congratulated on stage by Harness Racing Australia Chairman Mr Geoff Want and appeared overwhelmed by the announcement.

“This is as good as it gets really”, he said.

Ryan Phelan, the Master of Ceremonies, light-heartedly asked Day how a “bushie” would get on in the land of wine, cheese and perfume!

In a career spanning well over three decades, Neil Day has driven in excess of 1,500 winners and been victorious as a trainer on more than 1,300 occasions.

The fifty-two-year-old has been associated with many outstanding pacers including Friendly Footman, Ben’s Image, Burling Game, Camlach and Haydaze.

Day emulates Kevin Newman, Vic Frost, Tony Turnbull and Brian Hancock – the four previous New South Welshmen to represent Australia at the Championship.

Keith Addison (Qld-1975) and Ted Demmler (Vic-1987) are the only “Aussies” to win the WDC which is scheduled to commence on 7 June next year and spans 9 days.

Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) is the controlling body for harness racing in New South Wales with responsibility for commercial and regulatory management of the industry including 31 racing clubs across the State.  HRNSW is headed by an industry-appointed Board of Directors and is independent of Government.
