Harness Racing NSW today inquired into a report from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL) that boldenone at a mass concentration greater than 15 micrograms per litre in urine had been detected in a post race urine sample taken from KARLOO KIX after winning Race 9 the KOFM Pace (2,030 metres) at Newcastle on Friday 9 December 2011.

This finding had been confirmed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Racing Laboratory (HKJC).

Evidence was taken from the Trainer of KARLOO KIX Mr B Lew, Part Owner Mrs R Lew, HRNSW Regulatory Veterinarian Dr M Wainscott and ARFL Science Manager Dr A Crawley.

Mr Lew was found guilty to a charge under Australian Harness Racing Rule (AHRR) 190 (1) for presenting and racing KARLOO KIX at Newcastle on 9 December 2011, when boldenone at a mass concentration of greater than 15 micrograms per litre in urine was detected in the post race urine sample.

In determining penalty Stewards took into account Mr Lew’s:
• Forty (40) year clear training record in relation to prohibited substance offences
• The nature of the prohibited substance detected
• Support of the Harness industry over many years
• Personal circumstances
Mr Lew was disqualified for a period of six (6) months effective immediately.

Under the provisions of AHRR 195 KARLOO KIX was disqualified as the winner of Race 9 the KOFM Pace (2,030 metres) at Newcastle on Friday 9 December 2011 and placings amended to read:
1st HANGOVER JOE D.J. SMITH
