Stockbrokers Ben Silluzio and Brett Dawson had a great initiation into harness racing, when 4YO Falcon Seelster/Stronechrubie gelding Bressingham greeted the judge in the $3000 Renown Silverware Pace for C1 class over 2240 metres at Tabcorp Park Melton on Thursday.
Purchased by Lara trainer Dean Braun from New Zealand’s South Island around six weeks ago, the boys are part of a syndicate consisting of other newcomers Cameron Watson and John Muller, along with Kylie Watson, Justin Kroussoratis and Rob Benoit who have previously enjoyed success with the stable. Braun himself also holds a share.
Driven by Chris Alford, Bressingham was restrained to the rear of the field from gate six in his first Australian start, with the Riverina visitor Flaxton Fun leading from gate three.
Sent forward when the pace slackened, Bressingham had little trouble in parking outside the front runner, with Alford content to sit quiet.
Applying pressure to the leader approaching the final bend, Bressingham raced clear, straightening to win narrowly but well in a mile rate of 2:01.5 (last half mile 58.8 – quarter 28.8) in advance of Flaxton Run, with Mistamuckalee coming from last for third.
The $5000 Final will be held at Tabcorp Park next Thursday, with other heat winners Linga Longa Lass and The Guardsman looking like genuine challengers.
