Yesterday the South Australian Harness Racing community laid to rest one of its most talented horsemen, Mark Webster.

After a lengthy battle with illness, Mark passed away aged just 58.

Mark spent a lot of his early years around the horses, with his father Rupert (Rossi) and family members breaking in and working horses at Klemzig.

With a love of sport Mark was also a talented footballer, playing in his younger years for Broadview, Gaza and North Adelaide.  It was whilst he was at North Adelaide he had to make a choice between the two sports and Mark chose his first love of horses.

During his years in harness racing, Mark drove over 1000 winners, as electronic records have kept, and also trained 447 winners since the mid 1980s’.

Marks first winner was Speed Wagon at Kapunda in December 1983 and his last as a driver on Shesashark in July 2018, trained by Lance Holberton.

Always featuring in training and driving premierships, Mark was aligned with top stables of the 80’s such as Graham Silke, Alby Holberton, Joe Carbone and Peter Sergi and later with Ray and Lance Holberton to name a few.  Some of Marks great winners were Zulu Lu, Transarc, Rainbow Knight and Really Can Scoot.

Mark won many feature races and also represented SA as a junior driver in New Zealand.

A talented horseman taken too soon, Mark is survived by his wife Carolyn and children Laura and Anthony.
