It was a big week across the mainland for Tasmania with Ignatius once again showing his class with a track record win at Penrith on Thursday and then at Melton on Saturday night, the Juanita McKenzie-trained Isaac broke his metropolitan status.
The up and coming stars of the driving ranks were on display across the state last week when the opening four heats of the 6ty° Youngbloods were staged. The final two heats will be conducted in Launceston this Sunday night where it appears the championship will go right down to the wire.
Hobart will stage the Friday twilight meeting of the week where the preludes of the Tasmanian Sires’ Stakes series for two-year-olds will be the features.
The Stars
Ignatius – Wow! What a win in his New South Wales Breeders Challenge heat at Penrith on Thursday evening. Driven by his trainer James Rattray, Ignatius started from barrier two on the second row and worked to find the spot outside the leader. With the first half of the last mile being recorded in 57.4secs Rattray put his foot to the floor down the back straight in 27.9secs before he left his rivals standing to win by 14.7-metres in a 28.8secs closing section. The mile rate of 1min 53.6secs smashed the previous track record.
Buster William – produced a massive run to win in Devonport on Friday evening. After being three-wide and three-back at the bell it was clear to driver Rohan Hillier that the line was not progressing well so he took matters into his own hands and went four-wide at the 700-metre mark to beat an even C4-C5 field easily in what was one of the best performances from a horse in the back half of the field in Devonport for some time.
Cabel Hall – continued a good night for the north-east participants when he trained his first winner in Devonport on Friday with two-year-old filly Our Wonder Woman. It was only Hall’s second start as a trainer in his short career. To make the win even more special one of the breeders of Our Wonder Woman was Cabel’s late father Ken who passed away late last year.
Brady Woods – demonstrated his talents in the sulky winning two of the four heats in the 6ty° Youngbloods Challenge to give him an eight-point lead going into the final round of heats in Launceston this Sunday.
Plata O Plomo – had too much speed for his free-for-all rivals in Hobart where he upset the short price favourite Harjeet.
