Draw not ideal for Melodys Daughter

PROMISING mare Melodys Daughter is in danger of having her perfect record broken when she competes at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

Winner of her three starts, Melodys Daughter will be first-up since last August, which makes the daughter of Art Major susceptible to defeat according to trainer Aaron Bain.

“She’s very good but is going in fresh and on face value will need the run,” Bain said. “She’s got a bit of ability which can hopefully pull her through.

“She has a good base line under her but race day fitness it what she needs. She will benefit from the run but forward enough to make a race of it.

“She only had three starts but had a long preparation and is very green so she needed a break. She lightened off as well, so I knew she would benefit from a break.”

Adding to Bain’s woes is Melodys Daughter’s draw, with the four-year-old to come from barrier five.

Considered the one to beat, Western Debt has fared better in gate two, which should see the consistent mare working to the lead according to Bain.

“Western Debt is the main danger as she has got the draw and fitness on her side,” Bain said. “Five makes it tough for Melodys Daughter, but hopefully she can overcome that.”

Confident Melodys Daughter can work her way through the grades this preparation, Bain is considering an interstate trip later in the season.

Citing the Vicbred Platinum Mares’ Sprint Championship in April as a suitable target, Bain is also contemplating the Vicbred Super Series.

“She will have a Victorian campaign at some stage,” Bain said. “The Platinum Mares’ Sprint could be a good option.

“I’m looking to have a go at the Vicbred this series as I think she can at least pick up a heat and be competitive in it.”
