Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) provides this update in respect to Victoria Police issuing criminal charges against licensed driver Nathan Weightman.
HRV Stewards gave Mr Weightman the opportunity to provide submissions as to why action should not be taken against him under the Australian Harness Racing Rules (AHRR) while the police investigation continues.
Mr Weightman presented submissions to HRV Stewards, which have been considered along with all other relevant circumstances including the importance of protecting the integrity of and maintaining public confidence in the Victorian harness racing industry.
Following this consideration, in accordance with the provisions of AHRR 183(c), HRV Stewards have directed that any horses owned by Mr Weightman shall not be nominated for or start in a race. HRV Stewards have also directed that, under AHRR 183(d), Mr Weightman’s drivers license will be suspended with immediate effect.
HRV Stewards have not invoked the provision of AHRR 15(d), which would exclude Mr Weightman from attending racetracks.
Mr Weightman has been advised of his right to appeal this decision to the HRV Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board by 5pm on 30 November 2017.
With respect to the further investigation by Victoria Police, HRV is unable to make any further comment at this time.
