Shockwave Therapy is a service we are proud to offer which may assist in musculoskeletal, soft tissue and bone injuries in horses.Extracorporeal (meaning outside of the body) Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive and effective way to treat musculoskeletal, soft tissue and bone injuries in horses. It is an exciting treatment modality in the equine industry being used in elite stables around the world. Shockwave therapy was originally used in humans to treat kidney stones, tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis (heal spurs) just to name a few. The scientific advancements and research has now extended to the use in horses.

Used to treat a large degree of conditions such as:

Suspensory ligament tears and strains

Muscle strains and soreness (particularly back, neck, shoulder and hip)

Bowed tendons

Ligament and tendon tears/strains

Bucked shins (Dorsal Metacarpal Disease)

Splints

Navicular syndrome

Deep digital flexor tendon injuries (including those within the hoof)

Ringbone (high and low)

Osselets (Traumatic arthritis of the fetlock)

Arthritis conditions (particularly knees and hocks)

Sacroiliac Pain

Hamstring injuries/strains

Kissing spine

Wound healing

Burns

Scar tissue

As your doctor always says, do not take back pain lying down; the same concept applies for your equine. Shockwave therapy may increase your equines chances of returning to the arena or track better and faster then they would have not receiving the treatment. Shockwave therapy may also ensure that your equines body maintenance and comfort is maintained throughout their career.

Shockwave Therapy has been made an affordable alternative here at HV Performance Australia to aid in your equines rehabilitation and performance. We look forward to assisting you and your equine find a greater degree of success.

How does Shockwave Therapy work? Shockwave is NOT the application of electrical current or pulses, rather it is the application of acoustic sound waves applied to the body tissue from a position outside of the body. It works in a similar way that Ultrasound works. Ultrasound sound waves are designed not to distort body tissue as it enters the body; rather it passes through, then rebounds back through the body tissue and is captured by the Ultrasound probe showing the image of the body tissue on a computer.

Shockwave Therapy on the other hand, sends a wave like pulse through the body tissue 100 times greater then an ultrasound machine. Shockwave waves unlike ultrasound waves, do distort the denser body tissue as it passes through, and again on its rebound. The distortion of the denser body tissues essentially micro-manipulates (massages) the denser body tissues at the cellular level. This deep tissue massage stimulates neovascularisation (meaning the growth of new blood vessels in tissue) as well as producing fibroblasts and osteons, which are cells that heal body tissues. The deep tissue massage that shockwave therapy performs also creates a degree of analgesia (pain control). This essentially increases the healing rate of the injured site and improves their comfort allowing the horse to return to an improved level of performance once the site has healed.

*Due to the pain relief and the decrease in swelling and discomfort that shockwave therapy performs, the FEI has enforced the prohibited use of shockwave therapy 5 days before competition; racing is even longer at 7 days. This is a result of the horse possibly working harder then it should as the discomfort from the injury or ailment has been blocked through the shockwave treatment.
