COMEBACK pacer Shadow Sax is set to be given the opportunity to have his name etched alongside a group of all-time greats during the weekend.

In what will be his third run since spending 18 months on the sidelines, Shadow Sax has been nominated for Saturday night’s South Australia Cup at Globe Derby.

The Matthew Craven-trained gelding is one of 28 nominees vying for a berth in the Group Two.

Should the son of Shadow Play gain entry in the $60,000 feature he will attempt to become just the sixth champion to regain the title since the Cup’s inception in 1939.

Triumphant in 1947, Bandbox returned to the throne in 1949, with her second victory also making the daughter of Van Derby the Cup’s first dual winner.

Young Pedro repeated the feat with wins in 1959 and ‘61. The latter success came in one of two divisions of the Cup, with Billabong Scott winning the other

Westburn Grant became the third member of the group by scoring in 1990 and ’92.

Along with their SA Cup connection the trio also feature on the Inter Dominion honour roll!

Smoken Up then captured the Cup in 2008 before heading back across the border to win in ’11, ’12 and 13.

Smoken Up also joined Gammalite as the only four-time Cup winner, with the latter proving too good in 1982, ‘83, ‘84 and ’85,

As for Shadow Sax, he was successful in 2018 when prepared by record-breaking horsewoman Emma Stewart.

Fields for the stellar program, which includes the Trotters’ Cup, Derby and Kindergarten Final, are due to be released at 1pm today.
