THE current spate of wet weather has played havoc with many communities throughout New South Wales during the past few months.
And harness racing has not been immune to the situation with postponements and abandonments of meetings.
No doubt the most notable was the postponement of last month’s Miracle Mile for the first time in the history of the great race.
Through forward planning, the Forbes Harness Racing Club assessed the weather forecast and has moved this afternoon’s race meeting to nearby Parkes, hoping that the different racing surface can cope with the weekend’s predicted heavy rain.
Forbes President Lex Crosby said that while his club’s track staff do a wonderful job, Parkes was better-equipped to regularly maintain its racing surface.
“I looked at the weather forecast, which was not looking good for our meeting, contacted my committee, and we made the decision to approach HRNSW and the Parkes Club to suggest transferring the meeting,” said Crosby.
“It is disappointing that we are not racing in Forbes, given that we only host two meetings each year, but we are a club that always considers the participants, so we felt that we were given enough notice to move venues to ensure our owners and trainers do not miss an opportunity to race.
“The Parkes people always provide us with immense help and are pleased to host our meeting.
“Other than that, all races and sponsors remain the same.
“I must particularly thank our sponsors, who have been most understanding of the situation.
“I also must thank the participants, the Parkes Club, HRNSW and my hard-working committee for their assistance in enabling the change to happen.”
While this afternoon’s racing is strong across the board, Crosby was eager to pinpoint two important races on the program, namely The Forbes Inn ‘The Palmer’, named in honour of legendary racecaller Bill Palmer and the Thank You Alan Sharrock Pace.
“Alan has been the race day vet at both Forbes and Parkes for many years and recently decided to retire,” said Crosby.
“So, it is fitting that we recognise his contribution by naming an event after him.
“And Billy Palmer needs no introduction.
“He has been an icon of the sport in this area, doing so much for all clubs in the district.
“We certainly appreciate the efforts of both men.”
Today’s racing is scheduled to begin at 1:14pm.
