Mandogalup trainer Bill Horn brought up career winner number 519 when the $21.00 chance Theycall Me Stooge, driven by Horn’s good mate Colin Brown, won at Northam on Saturday night.

Horn, who became known nationally some 33 years ago as the trainer of the 1986 Inter Dominion champion Village Kid, turns 87 tomorrow although he celebrated the up-coming birthday yesterday with family.

Theycall Me Stooge’s great-grand-dam is a half-sister to Village Kid while his grand-dam is by Tricky Dick – a half-brother to Gramatan which was the sire of Village Kid.

While he has now won two races Stooge has some way to go to match the 93 wins and $2,117,870 put together by Village Kid during a remarkable career.

While four-time WA Pacing Cup and dual Miracle Mile winner Village Kid is clearly Horn’s best horse he has trained other Group One winners in Trunkey Sting (Fremantle Cup) and Black Irish (Fremantle Cup and Australian Pacing Championship).

“I hadn’t had a bet for some time but Stooge looked so well I had $50 on him”, Horn said yesterday.

Horn bought Stooge from the 2017 Gloucester Standardbreds WA Yearling Sale purely because of the maternal link to his former champion.
