AT THE moment he is known as the younger sibling of a super star, but Bechers Brook is beginning to build a reputation in his own right.
By top stallion Somebeachsomewhere from grand producer Cyclone Betty, the Australian Pacing Gold purchase is the brother of former freakish juvenile Waikiki Beach.
Recently sold to American interests, Waikiki Beach won 20 of his first 21 starts, with his victories including the APG Final, New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge, New South Wales Derby and two Breeders’ Crowns – all Group Ones.
As of last night’s Group Two success at Gloucester Park, Bechers Brook’s record is sitting on five wins and three placings from 10 starts for trainer Mike Reed.
“He has got a bit of his brother in him,” Reed said. “His record shows he goes along well and he still has a bit of improvement in him.
“Although he won last night, I wasn’t a 100 per cent happy with him going into the race as his blood wasn’t quite right.
“He won’t race again for a couple of weeks, so that gives time for his blood and fitness to improve.”
With Dylan Egerton-Green holding the reins, Bechers Brook settled towards the tail of the field from four as Lady De La Renta set the pace.
Angled into the clear turning for home, the colt dashed to a metre win from a fast-finishing Cott Beach, with Lady De La Renta battling on to be a metre-and-a-half away third in 1:56.4 over 2536 metres.
