Sydney's Standouts: Top Solo Entries at the Sale – Pt 2

There are only 21 fillies and 33 colts in the Sydney sale eligible for the exclusive $100,000 APG 2YO classic races in 2026. They will also be the only horses eligible for the $50,000 APG 3YO features for colts and fillies the following year.  

What are the odds your classic winner is in the list of youngsters below?  

Lot 220 (Vendor - KTR Standardbreds) 

This colt could be a potential sale topper. 

He is the only yearling by mega sire Bettors Delight in the Sydney sale and is out of Lislass, who has thrown six winners already and hails from an all-American family drenched with superstars, including Albert Albert (1.52.2, $1.2M) and Lis Mara (1.47.6, $2.2M). 

This colt’s full brother Escalera (1.50.1, $240K) has been a quality performer, winning 26 races on Qld and NSW tracks in recent seasons. 

His half brother Triple G (1.56.6, $106K) was a placegetter in the 2YO NZ Sire Stakes. 

Third dam Lisaleen left eight winners, including Lisfinny (1.50.2, $429K), Four Starzzzz Ittt (1.5.1.2, $396K), Listowel (1.51.8, $377K) and Lisselton (1.52.2, $224K). 

Bettors Delight over Christian Cullen mares is an absolute golden cross. It has produced some of the best pacers ever to race in Australasia, including Lazarus ($4.1M) and Chicago Bull ($2.4M). 

Twenty of the top 25 earners produced by Christian Cullen mares in Australia are by Bettors Delight. 

Lot 222 (Vendor – Rob & Nathan Rice) 

This filly by Stay Hungry by NZ bred mare Mac Toddy (1.55.9, $46K) is from a family with smart fillies in every generation. 

Her grandam Lady Toddy (1.57.5, $176K) won the Group 1 NZ Breeders Stakes and left eight winners, including tough mare Macjestic Toddy (1.53.8, $237K), who won 35 races on US tracks. 

This is also the family of star WA filly Water Lou (1.55.1, $422K) who has won 21 races as a 2YO and 3YO at Gloucester Park, including the 2YO Diamond Classic and the 3YO Westbred Classic. 

Stay Hungry’s dam, My Little Dragon, was a superstar 2YO and 3YO in America, winning more than $2 million in stakes. 

And Stay Hungry produced 11 filly winners in his first Australian 2YO crop in 2024, including second top earner Sugar Rush (1.56.8, $48K), who is out of a McArdle mare – the same cross as this filly. 

His top Australian earner Hunger Strike (1.54.9, $110K) is also a filly. 

Lot 235 (Vendor – Emma Day) 

This colt is by leading US sire Downbytheseaside from outstanding race mare Obahma Joy (1.53.2, $180K), who has left five winners from her first five foals, Major Obahma (1.51.1, $119K). 

Obahma Joy had solid 2YO and 3YO seasons but really came of age at 4, winning six races inlcding the Group 1 NSW Breeders Challenge final. 

The following year, she ran third to Vansumic and Adore Me in the Ladyship Mile at Menangle. 

She is a half sister to 2YO APG final placegetter Kingofthestars (1.52.6, $175K) and Make Mine Joe (1.56.3, $125K). 

The colt’s grandam Kirrilee Joy is a half sister to superstar filly Make Mine Cullen (1.53, $874K) and the dams of Captain Hammerhead (1.51.4, $247K) and 2014 NZ 2YO filly of the year Supersonic Miss (1.52.6, $373K). 

Lot 240 (Vendor – Patrician Park) 

This filly is by emerging sire The Storm Inside from unraced Presidential Ball mare Oval Office Affair and is a half sister to 2YO winner Im Monica (1.55.6, $46K). 

Presidential Ball won $3 million is stakes in the early 1990s and went on to become one of the most influential broodmare sires on the past two decades. 

His daughters have produced 386 winners of more than $21 million in stakes, including WA Pacing Cup winners My Hard Copy (1.51.6, $1.2M) and Mighty Conqueror (1.53.9, $697K). 

And his daughters have produced some outstanding winners.  

Maczaffair (1.52.3, $690K) won the WA Oaks and finished second to Ultimate Machete in the $200,000 Golden Nugget in 2017. 

And NZ bred fillies Itsonlyforyou and Cyclone Kate both won more than $300,000 in stakes. 

This filly’s second dam, Follys Girl produced eight winners, including Bathurst Gold Crown placegetter Falcons Folly (1.53.6, $125K). 

Lot 242 (Vendor – Lyndon Turner) 

This colt is by Interdominion winner Ultimate Sniper from unraced Artsplace mare Pastels, who has thrown five winners from her first five live foals. 

Ultimate Sniper was a superstar on the track and topped off his glittering career with a clean sweep of the 2019 Interdominion series in NZ as a 4YO. 

The handsome son of Bettors Delight earnt $840,000 and was named NZ 4YO of the year on 2019/20. 

He is a full brother to Ultimate Machete who has started his siring career with 25 winners of $885,000 from two crops in Australia. 

Ultimate Machete’s top earner, Miss Hepburn (1.55.9, $136K), is from Grinfromeartoear (a son of Artsplace), so a very similar cross to this colt. 

Ultimate Sniper’s first crop of 36 foals will be 2YOs in 2025. 

This colt’s grandam, Laconic, won the 3YO fillies APG final and left tough race mare Cinocal Jamane (1.58.9, $133K).
