Preparing yearlings for sale requires (amongst other things), correct nutrition, conditioning, grooming, and fitness. Properly prepared yearlings will be fit (not fat), sound with shiny coats and well handled.  Preparers that take the additional time and effort during the preparation period can often make the difference between an adequate yearling and a sale topper.

If you take on the responsibility to prepare yearlings for sale, it is important to understand the nutrient requirements of the horse and the critical balance between feed intake and exercise as they impact condition and soundness.

While the above rings so true, prospective buyers of yearlings in this Sunday’s Sale at Albion Park, which kicks off at noon, will be on the lookout for (not only) these exact traits, plus, you can be guaranteed they will have additional key components on a list of their own.

One of APG’s most successful buyers/investors at the yearling sales also adds an extremely important ingredient.  He calls it, ‘The ABC’s’ of selecting Champion Prospect Yearlings. While I don’t have permission to share all his secrets, he did go on the record with the following as a big part of his criteria.

(Please note: the below is not a recommendation, just an insight into a system that works for one high achieving owner in our sport, and it may however be a great starting point for finding that $100,000 Gr.1 winner come August 2021)

A. Mares Rating - Did the mare win stakes of at least $100,000 on the track?

or

B. Has the mare produced a $70,000 winner or more with a previous foal?

or

C. Has the sire of the yearling and the broodmare sire already have a golden cross credit (with the same sex as the yearling) that has won $800,000 or more on the track?

The Brisbane Sale is packed with yearlings that fit this “ABC Rating System”. This may be the strongest assembly of yearlings the Brisbane buyers have ever seen.

The list below are the lots that come with traits from the “ABC Rating System”
