Pacer - A horse which moves both legs on the same side forward in unison. 80% of harness races are for pacers. Trotter - A horse which moves its left front and right hind legs forward simultaneously, then follows suit with its right front and left hind leg. These are slightly slower than pacers, but they only race against horses of a similar gait. Sulky - The correct terminology for the cart that a harness driver sits in. On average sulkies weigh 30kg, are 3 metres long and 1.2 metres wide. Hopples - Leather or plastic straps connecting front and rear legs on the same side. They help a horse "Pace" correctly and remain in the gait. Used on pacers only |
