Queensland Horse Breeds Expo

Standardbred stall

1999 was the first year the Standardbred & harness racing were represented in the Horse Breeds Expo.  The stall was such a success, that those involved maintained their commitment to the Expo for the coming years.

The Standardbred display won a number of awards from Show judges in its first year, and aims for similar results at the 2000 show.

WHO IS INVOLVED?

  • The Queensland Harness Racing Board's Events staff coordinate the stall's design and setup in conjunction with industry licensees and club officials.  These individuals offer expert information on the standardbred as a racehorse, its care and training, and the management of the sport of harness racing throughout Australia.
  • The Standardbred Pleasure and Performance Horse Association of Queensland are active and generous volunteers to the stall.  The Association's members offer expert information on the standardbred as a pleasure horse, and its many uses at the end of its racing career.
  • The Queensland Standardbred Breeders Association offer information on the breeding and history of the standardbred in Queensland.
THE STALL'S PURPOSE

The stall is designed to offer a complete picture of the standardbred.  It supports the designers' announcements of the standardbred as the "World's Most Versatile Racehorse", and focuses heavily on the sport of harness racing, given the standardbred's main purpose is as a racehorse.

The Expo's ability to reach hundreds of thousands of average Queenslanders in a limited time frame makes it an excellent promotional tool for the entire harness racing and standardbred breeding industry.

The stall's displays can be effectively divided into three parts:

1 The first section of the display focuses on the standardbred as a horse.  It outlines the history of the breed and its distinguishing features.

ACHIEVED BY:

  • A video presentation and history chart are the main visual aids to achieve this aim.
  • This part of the display is similar to all the other horse breeds displays.
2 The second section is dedicated to the standardbred as a racehorse.  It includes information on the sport of harness racing and its management in Queensland through the Queensland Harness Racing Board and harness racing clubs.

ACHIEVED BY:

  • Photographs, information boards & diagrams
  • Examples of harness racing gear, driver's uniforms & branding equipment
  • Video & audio footage of races
  • Advertising brochures
3 The final section is dedicated to the standardbred as a pleasure horse.  It focuses on the adaptability of the standardbred to different types of equine sports, including show jumping, dressage, cross country racing etc.  It completes the picture of the standardbred by showing the general public there is life after racing for racehorses.

ACHIEVED BY:

  • Photographs, information boards & diagrams
