The record for the most consecutive centuries by an Australian driver now sits at 17 following a dual-venue winning treble to John Caldow yesterday.
Just as he has done in every season since 1991/92, Melton-based Caldow brought up both his national and Victorian tons when he drove winners at Maryborough and Ballarat.
The 39-year-old, who has also driven a winner in New South Wales and South Australia this season, brought up his 100th Australian winner for the 17th-consecutive year when he partnered $1.90 favourite Poirot to victory in the last race at Maryborough yesterday afternoon.
He made it 100 Victorian winners for the season last night with a winning double for his trainer-wife Maree at Ballarat.
Lord Of The Gym got home as a $1.70 favourite in the second heat of the Victoria Trotters Derby, while he also got Calder Image home as a $12 chance in the Powercor Trotters Handicap.
Caldow, who drives $1.70 favourite Just Glorious in tonight’s $50,000 Group 1 Vicbred Super Series 4YO Trotters Final, said achieving the mark was the realisation of one of the few goals he sets for himself at the start of each racing season.
“I don’t set myself many goals at the start of each season, but one of them is to try and drive 100 winners,” he said.
“I do pride myself on being consistent, so it is satisfying to have achieved the century for the 17th year in a row.” he said.
The treble took Caldow’s career tally to 2806 wins. They have come from 18,271 drives and his runners have earned $15,071,441 in prizemoney.
His best season was 1998/99 when he punched home 238 winners and earned $1,170,470 in stakes.
Caldow joins Daryl Douglas (330), Gavin Lang (165), Kerryn Manning (141), Chris Alford (138), Nathan Jack (120) and Jodi Quinlan (111) and Brian Gath (103) as Victorian drivers to have piloted 100 winners in the 2007/08 racing season.
