AFTER several years in the wilderness former top horseman Paul Cavallaro is returning to harness racing.

Among South Australia’s leading reinsmen for more than a decade, Cavallaro left the industry citing a lack of earning opportunities as the force behind his decision.

With the state experiencing some positive results under the current Harness Racing SA regime, Cavallaro has elected to return to the fold.

Cavallaro’s last race drive was at Globe Derby on June 7, 2014.

“At this stage I will just train one as a hobby and go from there,” Cavallaro said. “I bought one at the going sale in Sydney and he seems like a nice type.

“He already looks like a four-year-old, but time will tell if he is as good at the track as he feels at home.

“I fast worked him yesterday and he went pretty well. I’ll look at giving him his debut towards the end of February.

“I will get my licence to drive him in trials, but whether I race drive I haven’t made my mind up.

“I’m still running my own gardening business, but may increase the horses to train three or four.”

Cavallaro has almost 1200 wins and a host of features to his credit, with his last victory coming behind Day Dream Answer at Globe Derby in December 2013.
