Tabcorp Park Melton, Saturday 2 September 2017

South Australian trainer Robert Caruso returns to Tabcorp Park Melton tomorrow night for the annual Battle of the Claimers.

Caruso, 46, has had 55 starters in Victoria for six wins and six minor placings.

He had two wins from 11 starts in Victoria in the 2015-16 season, with Paleface Jasper and My Man Dan both winning on the one program, the Battle of the Claimers heats.

Both Caruso’s winners at the Battle of the Claimers heats in 2016 were driven by Chris Alford, who tomorrow night steers My Man Dan for Caruso in Race 5.

In season 2016-17 Caruso notched 26 wins and 44 minor placings from 153 starts, three fewer wins than in 2015-16 (29 wins from 163 starts).

His best winning season came in 2008-09 when he won 42 races from 220 starts.

Trainer Robert Caruso on:

Race 3 No.2 – Holme On The River

“Just forget the last run altogether. He’s going pretty well and if he was able to get the front he’d go all right. He’s probably better than you Victorians think he is.”

Race 4 No. 1 – Zedaguy

“He’s got the best driver in Australia and this is probably the weakest of the heats. He’s been running second to the other two but he’ll go well.”

Race 5 No.1 – My Man Dan

“Gavin Lang said he was a certainty beaten in the final of this series two years ago. Dani Hill said to me she thinks he’s come back an absolute treat and I lean towards him as the best chance of my three in this series. This is the toughest heat though tomorrow night, bumping into Dean Braun’s horse (Beach Boy Adios).”
