IT was 20 years ago the life of promising young local harness racing driver Glenn Tomlin was cut tragically short in a training accident at the age of 22.

Each year since his death, the Hunter Valley harness racing community has remembered him at an annual race night featuring the Glenn Tomlin Memorial – a race exclusively for Hunter Valley drivers and trainers.

Having gained his driving licence at the age of 16, harness racing was all that Glenn lived and breathed and he was looking forward to making a career of driving.

He was born into the industry with his parents, Bill and Pam, both licensed drivers and trainers.

Bill and Pam remember fondly Glenn’s passion for the sport and are honoured that the Glenn Tomlin Memorial has grown to become one of the feature races on the Newcastle harness racing calendar.

Life Member and ex-Newcastle Harness Racing Club employee Pam Tomlin said: “it’s humbling to have this race named in Glenn’s honour attracting his local peers. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years.”

Raced over 2030m the qualifying heats will take place at Newcastle Paceway on Saturday July 8 with the final being held on Glenn Tomlin Memorial Race Night, Saturday July 15.

Newcastle Harness Racing Club is expecting strong interest from local participants with over $6000 prizemoney on offer in each of the heats and over $8000 on the final.
